Role Overview
The Windows + Devices Fundamentals team works on key areas that affect the reliability, compatibility, performance, battery life and sustainability of Windows devices. The team works across hardware and OEM partners, the operating system and application layers to help protect, manage and enhance the Windows ecosystem.
As a Software Engineer, you will help build the next generation of Windows device optimizations. You will analyze software and hardware behavior, investigate system issues, identify optimization opportunities and develop reliable solutions across operating-system and application layers. The role also provides opportunities to learn how AI, silicon, firmware, hardware and software interact to improve Windows PCs.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze telemetry and trace data, with support from experienced engineers, to understand software and hardware behavior on individual devices and at scale.
- Investigate system issues using debugging and performance-analysis tools.
- Identify optimization opportunities and contribute to the design and implementation of improvements.
- Develop, test and maintain code that improves experiences across operating-system and application layers.
- Deliver reliable, high-quality solutions by following sound engineering practices.
- Incorporate feedback received through code reviews and design reviews.
- Use data to evaluate solutions, validate improvements and support engineering decisions.
- Collaborate with team members and partner teams to deliver improvements across the Windows ecosystem.
- Contribute to innovations focused on the reliability, compatibility, performance and optimization of Windows devices.
Required Skills / Eligibility
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Proven coding experience in one or more programming languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript or Python.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements.
- Must be able to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
- Experience gained through coursework, internships or professional work in software development, debugging or systems analysis is preferred.
- Understanding of debugging techniques and an interest in system performance and optimization.
- Knowledge of software engineering fundamentals, including testing, code quality and maintainability.
- Strong programming, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to learn new technologies and collaborate effectively with team members.
- Ability to use data to support engineering decisions.
- Coursework, internship or project experience with operating systems or system-level development is preferred.
- Familiarity with Windows internals, performance analysis or power optimization is preferred.
- Interest in understanding how hardware, firmware, operating systems and applications interact.
- Exposure to telemetry, data analysis, statistics or cloud data platforms is an advantage.
- Ability to communicate technical ideas clearly and collaborate on team projects.
